Employee Spotlight: Office Dogs Edition
It’s no secret that Nebo loves animals. From the Change Your Chicken Challenge, to working with PAWS Atlanta, to launching the Rescue Pledge, we strive to make the world a better place — not just for humans, but for our animal friends, too.
On any given day, you can find up to three dogs running around the office, sitting on laps, eating trash or causing general mayhem. And it’s been that way since the beginning. From day one, when Brian’s beloved Terminator roamed the halls of Nebo, to our newest pup Pipa, we’ve always been a dog-loving agency.
The chew toys are copious, the dog beds outnumber the couches and there’s a whole dog calendar just for puppy reservations. In case that’s not enough, the #Aww Slack channel pings all day with puppy pics (and sometimes cats).
I think it’s safe to say the dogs are something that makes Nebo special, and we wanted to introduce the world to our favorite four-legged friends. Hopefully they’ll make you as happy as they make us.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
She loves the water when it's in a pool, ocean or lake, but HATES baths. She starts quivering like the bath water is going to kill her. Whenever I let her outside to use the bathroom, if I'm not watching her carefully, she'll jump onto one of the floats in the pool and float around sunbathing.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
When I first started dating my boyfriend, she didn't like having to "share me". Out of jealousy she decided to poop on his bed to mark her territory. She now loves him more than she loves me.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
She is the biggest diva.

She does not like hugs or being picked up, but will suffer through a quick hug just for a treat.

Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
I got her during Snowmageddon 2014 in Atlanta. When I brought her home, there was snow everywhere. As it began melting over the next few days, she pounced from snow patch to snow patch because she was afraid of the grass. I had to explain to her that snow isn't a common thing here in the ATL and she'd better get used to the grass (yes, she understood every word of our conversation).

Jenkins is actually from Indiana. When I was attending graduate school in Boston I wanted to adopt.

She's the only picky dog I've ever met — she will refuse things like fries and regular people food if she doesn't want it.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
Her looks. During a job interview at Nebo, a candidate once said they wanted to work here “because you have a dog that looks like Jeremy Irons.”
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
Last year I was cleaning a pumpkin for Nebo’s Halloween pumpkin contest when Mars started eating the pulp. When her sister came to check it out, Mars went Cujo. Guess that pumpkin was really good.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Zen garbage muppet.
Give us a fun fact about your dog.
One time she escaped from our fence and came back home very sick. We drove two hours to an emergency vet, who gave her an X-ray and told us her stomach was four times its normal size. Afraid she’d eaten something poisonous, we paid $500 to induce vomiting. After about an hour, the vet came back to break the news. "It looks like your dog ate an entire pepperoni pizza." Still wondering who left an entire pizza in the wild.

My boyfriend and I adopted Mars at a little rescue shelter called ARF in Milledgeville. If you're in central Georgia, it's an amazing place to get a dog!
Potato
Human Companion: Chelsie Buckley
What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
She is terrified of toddlers, especially the ones on Razor scooters.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
Potato once ate a whole bag of fun-sized Snickers — including the wrappers. Also a rotisserie chicken with all the bones. Also an entire tube sock.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
I'm so excited, I'm so scared!

Potato is a jock who loves playing dress up. Nothing makes her happier than playing football and cuddling in her ugly Christmas sweater.

No one fucks with me when Potato's around! Little do they know she's a sweet girl (and a wuss).

I rescued Potato the day after I graduated college at the Humane Society in Atlanta. When I picked her up she hugged me with her paws, and I knew she was the one.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
If possible, Jett will always sleep with his head on a different surface than his body. Example: If he's laying on the rug, his head will be on the bare, hard floor. Pillows are preferable though!
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
Jett learned how to open cupboard doors just so he could annihilate our trash can.

Sensitive, smart, and lazy.

He's a retired racing dog that ran 81 races in his career. He had eight 1st place finishes!

We adopted Jett from a rescue organization (Adopt a Greyhound Atlanta) after he retired from racing.

She CANNOT stop herself from removing tags from clothing, pillows, blankets, etc.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
She almost caused an accident because she looks out the back of our car. The people behind us were laughing so hard when her little head and paws popped up over the backseat that they had to stop in traffic.

Haley sent me a link to another dog she saw on the PAWS website, who was then snatched up by someone else before I could get there. Thankfully, they had a "sweet Westie" that was just put up for adoption that morning. I spent three hours on a wild goose chase around Atlanta trying to find this dog. When I finally met him, it was love at first sight. We've been best buds ever since.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
She lays completely flat, legs splayed out and all! She's like three feet long!
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
We left her alone and out of her crate for a few hours, and she ate an entire pan of cinnamon rolls that were wrapped up on the counter.

She is my spirit animal, literally.

She loves Taylor Swift's new song "Look What You Made Me Do". Every time I play that song in the car, I swear her head bobs along a little.

Her ears are the fluffiest things! They melt me every time.
Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
We adopted her from the Howell Mill Humane Society this summer. It was probably our fourth or fifth time going to look at dogs, and neither of us were 100 percent sold on getting a dog, so we kept leaving empty-handed. Then one rainy Friday morning, we went back to the Humane Society and I locked eyes with five-month-old Riley, and I just knew she was ours! We adopted her that day, and have loved her ever since.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
He loves my blowdryer and when I blow it in his face. It takes me twice as long to get ready in the morning because of this game — 15 seconds for me, then 15 seconds for him. It's hilarious.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
Moose LOVES coming to Nebo. When I bring him into the office he starts to cry as soon as I pull into the parking lot. One day, my boyfriend picked me up from work with Moose in the car. As soon as the car was in park, he jumped/fell out of the passenger side window and ran up to the front door.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Obsessed with people and other dogs, and incredibly sweet and loving.

Since he was a puppy, he's loved to take showers and baths. He'll cry to get in the shower with me if he's able to sneak his way into the bathroom.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
He loves to give hugs and cuddle. He's a growing puppy, but he still seems to think he's lap-dog size. I love snuggling with him!

Truth be told, my brother had another baby, and the excitement of my new nephew triggered my need for a puppy. I basically got him 12 hours after the baby was born.

Instead of sneezing like a normal person or dog, she has a reverse sneeze where she sucks in air instead.

Layla can't jump on a couch, however she can somehow escape from a two-foot-high playpen consistently.

She loves everyone and is very independent.

The Queen of the U.K. loves and owns many Corgis.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
The love she gives you when you walk in a room. It doesn't matter who you are, she’s ready to follow you and give you all the licks and cuddles a person could need.

We got her from a breeder. She was flown in and we got to meet her at the airport as a little puppy.
Goose
Human Companion: Haley Savage
What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
Goose loves to make his tennis balls as slobbery as he possibly can.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
Goose ate one of my doctor bills once. Without it, I couldn't get workers' comp for an at-work injury. Whoops!

Goose is weed.

Goose loves tennis balls more than anything, and will pretty much only drop one for food and treats (and typically has a pile of them next to his food bowl). He'll bark, sleep, snuggle, etc., all with a ball in his mouth.

My brother-in-law got Goose before I met him, so I don't know much about it. I do know that he wouldn't introduce my sister to him right away because he was a bad wingman and stole all the attention. Nobody can resist that face!

Ellie loves the sound of champagne popping and will come running from anywhere in the house when she hears it.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
Ellie LOOOOVES going to the beach. Last time she went she tried to jump out of the car window once she realized where she was going. Apparently, her dad wasn't driving fast enough for her.

Ellie is Adderall.

Her favorite place to go bar hopping is the Highlands. Ellie is an IPA snob and will steal sips of yours if you aren't looking.

Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
I lived with my sister at the time, and we argued for weeks about if she should get a dog or not. I thought it was too much, but she thought it was time. Once I saw the picture of Ellie I folded. My sister picked her up while I was out of town and I came home to a little ball of fluff.

She just LOVES it when you blow raspberries.

When she was a pup she jumped in a pile of leaves and had to burrow her way out. All we saw were moving leaves.

Human Companion: Samantha Sims
What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
He won't poop in his own yard (only stranger's yards). He also will not walk over any kind of grate in the street, grated bridges, stairs, etc.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
When he was younger, he escaped from his locked crate. The crate was found still locked, across the room, and London was on the sofa. How he got out remains a mystery.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Stoic.

He howls when he hears fire truck sirens. He’s also very vocal when he’s dreaming (lots of yelping).
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
Everything. He is the chillest, friendliest, sweetest little man. When we adopted his younger sister (who is crazy) he accepted her almost right away, despite the fact that she torments him daily, destroys all his toys and steals his food.

I adopted him from the rescue organization Furkids. They found him in the woods at Lake Hartwell running around with his sister (who they were unable to catch).

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
She snores like a 300-pound man. She "talks" (whines/cries) in the morning as soon as she hears the alarm clock because she's so excited to be alive (apparently).
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
She once tore open a package with styrofoam peanuts while her paws were wet. The peanuts stuck to her paws like glue. It took hours to get them off.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Kooky.
Give us a fun fact about your dog.
She will eat anything and has an iron stomach. I'm convinced that her stomach is full of chicken and other small animal bones (collected from her walks), wood chips from the yard, and napkins.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
She is 60 pounds of loveable mush, but thinks she is five pounds and will crawl in your lap at every opportunity.
Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
We found Lily at a shelter in rural Georgia. I don't know her story, but she was not treated well before arriving there, as she was scared of everything and everyone when we first met her. She was so timid she would barely come close enough to smell us. She's come a long way!

She loves to lay flat and crawl under the couch. She likes to hide under there.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
I got a new outdoor rug for my balcony over the weekend and as soon as I set it down on the balcony floor, Pipa peed on it. I'm sure it was her way of telling me she liked it.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Pipa is a sweet little diva!
Give us a fun fact about your dog.
Most people think I named Pipa after Pippa Middleton, but really I just thought it would be a cute name. It means "(smoking) pipe" in Spanish. You could say she's a tribute to Rene Magritte's "The Treachery of Images" painting. I actually got her a blanket with the "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" print and she loves it.

Her happy tail wag when I tell her she's a good girl is one of them but there are too many to list!

I got Pipa only four days ago! She was born in Alabama so I drove five hours there and back to get her. Totally worth it!

Hashbrown is a grumbly little menace who loves to talk to us (via his grumbles), give love and cuddles (while grumbling) and play (while grumbling).

He loves to burrow under things — beds, chairs, blankets. If you call him to come upstairs to the bed, he will excitedly run toward you and then just dart under the bed. We think it's the Dachshund in him.

Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
We were looking around shelters for a few weeks. One day the search went from casually considering to 'today we could maybe get a dog.' The last shelter of the day we were visiting was about to close. They showed us all the dogs outside and the options were sparse. We were saying goodbye to the shelter when the owner (who "detected we were good people") asked if we wanted to see some of the dogs who had already been taken in for the night. We went into the trailer and in the bottom, right corner of a stack of kennels, I pointed right at him and said "who is that little guy?" The shelter lady took him out and told us his name (Hashbrown) and his nickname (Tater Tot), and he immediately came to me and fell asleep in my lap. It was love at first sight.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
She always comes into the shower with me and has been doing it since the day she was brought home. As soon as the water turns on...tick-tick-tick (footsteps on the floor)...she trots into the bathroom, lays down, and enjoys her steam bath.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
She found a way to weasel off her leash at a coffee shop in Virginia Highlands and then darted across Virginia Ave. chasing squirrels. My husband and I were chasing her and stopping traffic. The end result was us hiring the great Atlanta Dog Wizard to help train her and learn the ropes of being a city dog.

Meryl Streep meets Zach Galifianakis.

Although she has a major underbite, her teeth are actually very aligned.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
She has such a unique look and personality. As she's gotten older, she's developed habits that make us smile. She's always looking for an ear scratch and paws at you when she really needs it. One time, she did this to our Comcast installer working on our home who was very confused, but inevitably she got her way.

One Saturday morning in 2011, I was underneath the blow dryer at the salon getting my hair done and flipping through Craigslist. Lo and behold, I found the love of my life, with those crazy blue eyes and fluffy tail staring into my soul saying, "I'm meant for you." I immediately called my friend who then picked her up for me and brought her home. Best $50 ever spent.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
He doesn't like peanut butter... Doesn't every dog like peanut butter?!
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
One time when my family was out of town, we had my aunt watch him. She lives about a mile away from our house and he escaped her backyard. She looked for him everywhere and drove over to our house to see if anyone left any messages on our answering machine. Tucker was just chilling on our back porch, waiting to be let inside!
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
He's basically been an old man his whole life — stubborn and protective, he hates change of any kind.

He responds to several names — Tucker, Tuck-Tuck, Old Man Tuck, Colonel Tuckerton, Schnooks, Schnooky-Schnooks, Mr. T, Teeter Toter, I could go on... But he knows all of his names.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
I'm obsessed with him. It's so hard to pick just one thing... I guess I love that he's super smart? I taught him so many tricks; the most recent trick is "kiss" where he touches his nose to my lips.
Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
I had been begging for a dog for years! And finally, when I was in sixth grade, (wow so long ago...) my parents told my sister and me that we'd been super good this year and that they had picked out a schnoodle for us. We've now had him for 13 years!

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
He winks at you sometimes and does this thing where he claps his paws.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
He would run away when I was in college if the roommates left the door open or if he saw the opportunity. It would scare the shit out of me when I couldn't find him. He did this on a few occasions and he always ended up at the same place: at the pizza joint across the street. The employees and many customers knew whose dog it was and would just watch him for a bit and feed him all the pepperoni his little heart desired.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
He's a fluffy faced dingus.

I gave him away to a family once when I was in college because I couldn't afford to take care of him and he was too much of a responsibility for me at the time. He ended up being returned to me a little over a year later because the family moved to a place where they couldn't keep pets. They had changed his name Patches and I changed it back to Mr. Rupert. Whenever he came to Nebo with me he always wanted to sit on my work chair with me or on either mine on Pete's desk.

His big floppy dumbo ears.

My friend in college who I lived with was at a nail salon, and some random guy off the street brought him into the salon. My friend agreed to take him and just brought him home. He fit in the palm of my hand back then.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
Whenever she sits and she knows that's what you want out of her, she gets the tallest, proudest posture and throws her head back a little bit to show how much of a good girl she is.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
She slammed my parents' chihuahua into a stone wall when she got a little too playful. He's fine — relax.

She's got more energy than any dog needs but makes me laugh on the daily with her goofy antics. She's also a darn good cuddler.

She falls in love with anyone she spends more than five minutes with. Their departure results in a crying fest.

I made a plan to wait a few months until I was settled into my new job and new apartment and somewhat financially secure before I took on the huge commitment. Then I immediately threw that out the window one weekend when there was an influx of pets from the various hurricanes (she wasn't a hurricane refugee but apparently I made space for others).

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
Every time we get to the “turn around” spot on our walk, he starts spinning out of control in circles on his leash. It's like maybe he knows we're heading back to go home and he's so excited he can't keep himself under control? Or he's just nuts.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
We had my parents keep Corby while we were gone for three weeks. They have three dogs — two outside males (Max & Henry) and an indoor tiny female (Winnie). Apparently Corby was trying to get fresh with Max & Henry when they were all outside. Henry is a Jack Russel and a bit feisty/will defend himself, but Max is a 14-year-old Schnauzer and a pushover. Because Max is so old and frail, and because Corby doesn't realize he's bigger than the other dogs, he basically kept jumping on him and Max would just flop onto the floor and be a rag doll. Mom had to keep Max and Corby separated for the rest of the three weeks. Poor Max.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Rambunctious by day, couch potato by night, and a complete traitor when anyone offers him petting or food.

Corby is named after our favorite bar from when we were at grad school at Notre Dame: Corby's Irish pub.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
He is a complete loaf and would be happy to spend all day curled on the couch, and he's super cuddly. It's super cute because he's 35 pounds and thinks he's a lap dog, so he'll just jump right up and try to sit directly on you, often in super awkward positions, and he has no clue.

We adopted him from the Atlanta Humane Society.

She likes to eat dried earthworms off the sidewalk.

She rolled in chewing gum and had it stuck all over her head and neck. She almost had to get shaved.

She is a fluffy ball of endless energy and thinks everyone is her friend.

My girlfriend talked me into going to meet my dog at an adoption event in Kennesaw. I had no intention of getting another dog and after 20 minutes, we rescued a two-month-old puppy.

She's eaten some pretty random things. How some of them have gone through her digestive system without causing damage, I'll never know.

I adopted her from the Southeast Pug Rescue Association. Someone brought her there after finding her tied up and abandoned at a gas station.

He will eat anything. Absolutely anything. And he subsequently smells really bad way too often.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
He once ate about three square feet of a bamboo rug without any real consequences.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Rex is a broken little guy given his background, and as such he needs love, acceptance and security. His core mental state is insecure, which is heartbreaking.

He loves hearing his name. Just saying his name sends him into a super-excited state.
What’s your favorite thing about your dog?
His continued effort to be a good dog. He had a broken puppy-hood and I’m glad I saved him. However, that means he is a work in progress. He wants to be good. He loves his core pack. He wants to be awesome.
Tell us the story of how you got your dog.
Rex was adopted by a family as a puppy, but when he was about eight months old they had to return him to a shelter. Kelly knew a pit bull mix of his age wouldn't have a good chance of being adopted, so she acted quickly and took him in. Unable to keep Rex herself, but wanting him to have a good home, she asked around to see if anyone at Nebo could take him. I offered to watch him one weekend while Kelly was out of town. By the end of the weekend he was mine.

Cami is pure love. She thinks the world is pure love. One day on a walk she tried to greet an outside cat that was sitting between some rose bushes. The cat smacked the holy hell out of her. She jumped back and looked at me, completely horrified, like everything she knew about the world had been shattered.

Cami is pure love and affection.

She’s named after the female Terminator from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Her overall happiness and love of everyone and everything.
Tell us the story of how you got your dogs.
Cami's story is a special one. When Cami was seven months old, we found her looking through Nebo's front door. She didn't look like a stray dog, just a dog that was lost and scared. With a lot of gentle coaxing and peanut butter, Kimm got Cami to come to her. Knowing how I would feel if I lost Terminator, I asked some people to take her to the nearby Humane Society to see if she was chipped and had a home. When Cami showed up, the people at the Humane Society were shocked. Someone had just tried to drop Cami off, but was told the shelter was full. Instead of taking Cami to another shelter, the guy abandoned her in the middle of Midtown to fend for herself. We saved her. And now she's my best friend.

What’s your dog’s weirdest quirk?
His weirdest quirk was he was the sweetest dog ever, but could turn into Cujo if he “found” dropped food and thought someone would take it from him.
What is the worst or funniest thing your dog has done?
After watching me (full head tilt) tell my friend that he could easily open the screen door if he just stood up and popped the handle, he proceeded to stand up and pop the handle to come greet us outside.
How would you describe your dog’s personality in one sentence?
Lovingly ferocious.

He was named after the movie and completely lived up to his name.

He was my world. I’ll always love and miss him.

It’s a long story. But part of it was Adam begging me to get him and saying he’d help me raise him even though he was still in high school living with our parents.
