The Art of the Hype Video

“Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?”

This iconic quote, originally uttered by legendary Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy, is still screamed by over 60,000 fans at every home game. It’s a line that immediately unifies the crowd, reminding us we’re all here for the exact same reason. They are words that fans long to hear from March to August — a battle cry signaling that football season is finally upon us.Whether you’re a diehard alum or you’ve been waiting for a championship with your hometown team since the day you were born (like me), these words resonate deeply right now.

As the air turns crisp and fall rolls in, football season adds an extra electric current around us.

Excitement. Nerves. Anticipation.

Right now, every fan base is bound together by hope, adrenaline, and the belief that anything is possible. We are all undefeated. Even if that might change in a few weeks when we’re cursing from our living rooms and screaming over our fantasy football teams.

In today’s fandom-driven society, football is no longer just one weekly game on TV (or every streaming platform known to man).

It’s all-consuming.

It’s embedded in our local communities and running on a 24/7 loop of sports shows and podcasts. Both collegiate and professional programs have established immense digital footprints, transforming into powerful media machines. From schedule announcements and training camp TikToks to post-win shitposts (a Bills specialty), the video content is endless. Just this week, a TikTok of a Colts intern getting promoted made headline news.

Yet, among all the digital noise, there is one piece of content that fans look forward to each year, solidifying that we’re on the cusp of another nail-biting season: the hype video.

What used to be a simple montage set to stock music has evolved into a cinematic experience that unifies a fanbase and beyond. Teams even produce teasers just to build hype for the hype video itself. And without fail, we tune in the second it drops.

On the surface, a one-minute social clip might seem trivial. Millions of videos are shared every day. So, why do these resonate so deeply?

The best hype videos don't just show big hits or plays from the previous season. They build a narrative that sets the stage for the entire season. Whether you’re the underdog waiting for a breakthrough moment or the defending champion carrying the heavy weight of staying on top, a great hype video bridges history and emotion. It honors a city’s roots, brings a community together, and leaves you feeling like you could run through a brick wall, or, if you’re a Bills fan like me, jump through a folding table (maybe even one that is on fire).

The teams creating this content aren't just talented media pros. They are real members of the community. They believe in the message just as much as we do. They deeply understand our team’s history, what makes our city special, and what it takes to stir the soul of a fan base.

Most brands will never experience having an audience this emotionally invested. Sports teams possess some of the most passionate, outspoken fans anywhere, and these videos work because they lean directly into those high-stakes feelings.

The Hype Videos Getting Us Hype

University of Tennessee
The Vols honored Dolly Parton amid her tragic passing in their Week 1 hype video. Honoring her humble beginnings and deep love for the state, the video features a small cabin set to her iconic song “My Tennessee Mountain Home.” This is the type of video that will cue the tears and cause the entire nation to rally behind a team.

Seattle Seahawks
As defending Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks are also playing in the first game of the season. The team’s seasonal hype video is themed “Run It Forward” to continue the franchise’s upward momentum and let fans know they are hungry for more.

Patriots
This video has it all. A Hall of Fame narrator, a soundtrack from New England legends Aerosmith, and pairs historic clips with an orchestra that builds tension and excitement. I mean, this comment says enough: Ran through 61 walls because 60 is in the past.

Buffalo Bills
Last, but never least in my book. The Buffalo Bills historically have worn the city’s blue-collar identity as a badge of honor. But this year marks significant change for the underdog franchise: a new coach and a new stadium. Ryan Fitzpatrick, a former player and hype man who still calls Buffalo home, connects the nostalgic past with the bright future to throw away doubt and fear of change and, instead, usher in a new era that the city deserves.

Do you feel the hype? Because I sure do. So to answer Marv Levy’s question: there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
